How To Improve Photo Quality With One Amazing Machine Learning Feature

Graphic Design

Find out how to get the most out of your low-resolution pictures by improving photo quality with this simple but powerful machine learning software.

Remember in those crime-solving tv shows where they would zoom in to a photo and someone would say 'enhance' and the pixelated image would suddenly become clearer? Well, now it's a reality!

One of the website and branding projects that I am working on at the moment had a photo that I needed to use. However, it was taken a few years ago which meant the image was quite pixellated. I did not know what to do with it or how to make it better.

Then, when I was catching up on the Apple iPad event from earlier this month, something incredible caught my attention. One of the apps that featured in the promo video was Pixelmator Photo, a professional photo editing application with a feature that has come straight from science fiction.

The Pixelmator Photo Pro iPad app is now capable of using an algorithm to enhance images to create an incredibly detailed photo with realistic textures, smoother edges and improved detail.

In Apple’s video event, the California tech giant shows someone zooming in to a photo on the new iPad Air, tapping a simple button to enable this photo quality enhancing feature and bam – the pixellated image becomes suddenly crisp, details clear as day. This app was just what I needed.

The Pixelmator Photo ML Super Resolution feature is an incredibly powerful tool for designers and marketers to have. It can instantly improve the quality of your images, making it well worth the €8.99 price tag.

How To Improve Photo Quality With ML Super Resolution:

  1. Load your photo into Pixelmator Photo from your photo library
  2. Tap edit in the upper right-hand corner
  3. Tap the ML Super Resolution icon that looks like a grid of dots
  4. Sit back and let the algorithm work it’s magic
  5. Tap ‘Done’ when the processing has finished and export your image

It is as simple as that, but the results are truly incredible. So incredible that I will be adding this app to the list of essential design apps I keep installed year-round on my devices.
